the books - smells like content (via p3pto)
When I saw the Books a few years ago, they played this song, I think with the same video in the background. I think it’s ridiculously witty. Ya know, generally, they make some aleatoric music where they decontextualize found sound and put it back together in a different form with music. Here they take the spoken word apart, breaking meaning off from sound, and then putting the words back together with new meaning. I sat here for a few seconds trying to make sense of the song’s use of the word “disparity”, thinking, is “despair-ity” an actual word? It’s not the way the video spells it out, but the way the song breaks down the word, in the context of the song’s sort-of “ambiance”, I lost track.
It’s a really soothing video. Words are like triggers and the neural pathways that these triggers set off become more fixed as we persistently attempt to organize the world and make it more manageable. The cool thing about this video is that, by doing what smalter is talking about, it makes my neurons fire in all sorts of different directions. I can feel my brain expanding.
