I remember interviewing at a financial research firm and the dude asked me to brainstorm ways to estimate sales at the store across the street. I said I would look to see how many people were entering and exiting the store - the interviewer was unimpressed. I said that I would use traffic as a proxy for order volume - his eyes lit up.
