Its interesting, when you hear Jay-Z explain how that first album he wasn’t concerned with people singing along and how the structure of the songs were more chaotic, it makes you think that in his new albums he’s concerned with precisely these things.  On the one hand there’s the idea that he’s making a better commercial product, on the other hand there’s the idea that he’s just making boring music with a higher probability of mass appeal.  There’s also the idea that there’s an inverse correlation between having things to say and falling back on these formulaic crutches.
