When Obama said that 100% of McCain’s ads were negative, and McCain said, “No they weren’t,” he looked genuinely hurt. I know on the night that Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president, McCain ran an ad unequivocally congratulating Obama on his historic accomplishment.
I think McCain liked the idea of Obama in theory, but once he actually had to go against him he genuinely began to hate him and that just grew. I think McCain thinks he’s the better person for the job, but is just ridiculously frustrated that Obama is so much more articulate than he is. To be sure, a well articulated idea doesn’t necessarily make it any more correct. To be sure, McCain is intentionally portraying Obama falsely as a radical so people won’t think he’s one of them and so that his final message of “go with who you can trust” has more resonance.
