If you want to reach young people (and maybe anybody) you need to be cool and sometimes that requires a redefinition of cool. What I like about Jay-Z is that he uses his street cred to make certain things cool. He’s Young HOV, but he’s also Little Orphan Annie. For all the criticism, from people genuinely trying to make a difference, that it’s still music glorifying selling drugs, that’s a nod to those same people.
