Kids These Days…

With the sense of community vanished, and with it the authority for conferring honor or opprobrium for meeting or failing to meet one’s duties and responsibilities, everyone was thrown back on themselves, and fulfillment was desperately searched for in new forms of experience-sex, drugs, psychoanalysis, revolutionary politics, wherever it seemed likely to be available.  People who once might have found a reasonable measure of contentment in their communities, now began to live like artists, but without the talent or temperament that sometimes justified passionately reckless living, or as half-hearted bohemians, attempting to live freely but still nagged by the need for security, tranquility, and order in their lives.

- Joseph Epstein, Divorce, The American Experience
