The article talks about how bad Oscar speeches have ruined careers. One more reason why it’s probably not a good career move to be pathetic. The audience should like you, but can’t feel like they know you. Here’s what you want to avoid. You have one good role and you start to feel like people like you, so you open up to them and be yourself, expecting them to validate your true self, but it turns out that they think your true self is a loser and because you were probably trying too hard, you weren’t even putting forth your true self. Nonetheless, the you that they hate will now be associated with whatever role you play and in reality, no matter how cooky a role you play, you can’t stray too far from who you are, so you’re basically pigeonholed.
