Apposite and Opposite

Two words that mean very different things, but sound similar.  I was in a predicament here when I came across this word-not familiar with it-in a sentence that said, “The blank case is singularly apposite to the case at bar”.  That’s all fine and well, but I was confused about what the case stood for in the first place.  Normally, when you don’t know what a word means you’re supposed to look at the context, but that’s what I was relying on the word to clarify.  Catch 22.  Here’s what I’m thinking.  A rule of thumb.  If the context is complicated, use a common word.
