I’m not sure the eye-rolling in response to puns has all that much to do with them being easy or a cheap laugh.  People tend to use puns in conversation and it jerks you out of whatever you were talking about, all so that you can say, “hey, look at me, I’m clever!” Or, alternatively, that you care more about this stupid joke than maintaining a conversation.  This is probably why people don’t like frequent punners.  It could be endemic of more problematic traits.
